Study for the Grand Silence Blanc, c. 1928. Winter landscape of Clarence Gagnon.

"I did not settle in Paris by delicacy of misunderstanding (......) Out there, I paint only Canadian, I dream only of Canada. The motif remains fixed in my mind and I do not allow myself to be captured by the charms of landscape change. In Switzerland, in Scandinavia, everywhere, I find my French Canada. " - Clarence Gagnon, 1931.

In 1927, Clarence Gagnon was commissioned, at the request of his publisher, to produce 75 illustrations for the book "Le Grand Silence Blanc" by Louis-Frédéric Rouquette. Since he never set foot in the Northern Canada, he draws inspiration from the landscapes of the Côte-Nord Region, Baie-St-Paul or the glaciers he had observed in the Alps during a trip to Europe. His young protege, René Richard, completes to inform him with his tales of hunting.
