From 1953 to 1954, Fernand Toupin and Jean-Paul Jérôme were greatly inspired by Goerges Braque's works and created still lifes of Cubist inspiration. Through these works, he becomes aware of the stakes of modernity in painting.
The group composed among other artists such as Jauran, Jean-Paul Jerome and Fernand Toupin form the Plasticians. In 1955, he signed the manifesto proclaiming the need for a geometric abstraction focused on the arrangement of plastic elements.
Still life with coffee, 1954 is a work created by Fernand Toupin right before a major turning point in his artistic career.
