Serigraph on 100 copies. after the original work of Jean-Paul Lemieux , created in 1974 . Exhibited at the Musée National des Beaux-Arts du Québec.
Self-portrait exposes the lives of the old painter. Lemieux himself, with his back turned to the past, throws a glance in which all the solitude of a man is read before the inexorable flow of time. We see him here at three different ages - child, adolescent and old man - as in an image of Epinal. The paintings superimposed on the white wall evoke other slices of his life. The evening visitor, 1956 and Le cavalier dans la neige, 1967, illustrate the pictorial maturity to which the artist has come. They play a full part in this autobiographical narrative that associates man and painter.

The power of evocation of time and above all the insistence with which the viewer is "summoned" by the painter in Self-portrait, result from the balanced combination of formal elements. The red floor contrasts with the clarity of the decor. The figures take the frontal position. The bodies are divided by walls and frames. Our own reflection is stimulated by the presence of paintings in the painting, and by those beings who cross the dimensions of time and space. Text by Mrs Michèle Grandbois from the painter's original work at the Musée National des Beaux-Arts du Québec
