In the 1930s and 1940s, Marc-Aurèle Fortin traveled Sainte-Rose and the Laurentians in bicycle which allowed him to travel as often as possible. He travels the roads north of Montreal and observes landscapes that are more difficult to reach by train or car. Emblems of his artistic production, the elms and the old houses of Sainte-Rose mark the great periods of the artistic career of Fortin. In 1945, when he was represented by the Galerie l’Art français in Montreal, Fortin met artist René Richard with whom he shared his impressions of Quebec landscapes.
