Eugène Boudin

French painter of the 19th century

Eugène Boudin

Eugène Boudin was a French painter born on July 12, 1824, in Honfleur, Normandy, France. He is considered one of the pioneers of the Impressionist movement and is known for his landscape paintings and seascapes.

Boudin grew up in a family of sailors and was introduced to the sea at an early age. He initially worked in his father’s stationery and frame-making shop, where he discovered his love for drawing and painting. He later moved to Paris to pursue his artistic career and began studying at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in 1847.

Boudin’s paintings focused on the changing moods and atmospheric effects of the sea, and he often painted en plein air, capturing the light and color of the outdoors. He was also interested in capturing the daily life of the fishermen and sailors who lived and worked on the coast.

In 1858, Boudin met Claude Monet, who would later become one of the leading figures of the Impressionist movement. Monet credited Boudin with teaching him the importance of painting en plein air and capturing the fleeting effects of light and color.

Boudin’s work was well-received by critics and collectors during his lifetime, and he exhibited regularly at the Paris Sal on. He was also an important influence on many other artists, including Johan Barthold Jongkind, who would later become a mentor to Vincent van Gogh.

Boudin passed away on August 8, 1898, in Deauville, Normandy, France. His paintings can be found in museums and collections around the world, including the Louvre in Paris and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
