Tony Scherman

Tony Scherman is born in Toronto in 1950. His father Paul being a conductor and violinist, he spent his childhood and his life as a young adult in Paris, Europe, then in London from 1955.

In 1971, he completed an MFA (Master of Fine Art) at the Byam Shaw School of Art. He received an MA from the Royal College of Arts in London in 1974. He returned to Toronto two years later. Several solo and group exhibitions follow one another both in Canada and abroad.

His expressive work often depicts historical figures and events, such as Napoleon and Hamlet, including prominent figures from the American Civil War.

In fact, his paintings of Napoleon and the French Revolution were the subject of a 2002 art book titled, Chasing Napoleon: Forensic Portraits. Tony Scherman's work is notable for its use of encaustic painting techniques. His works are distributed both in the major collections of several North American universities and in corporate collections.
