Roger Cantin

Roger Cantin was born in Quebec City on April 28, 1930 in the Charlesbourg borough. After completing his studies at the École des beaux-arts de Québec in 1964, he began his career in figurative art. He held his first large-scale exhibition of his work in Trois-Rivières in 1966 and then at the Franciscans in Toronto. He became known in the 1980s and 1990s for his paintings of the streets of Trait-Carré in Charlesbourg.

His works have a great mastery of space and simple forms, while the colors are often dominated by shades of gray. His main subjects are Quebec houses, the streets of Old Quebec, interior scenes, landscapes and still lifes. He mainly uses watercolor and acrylic paint. He loved to walk the streets of his neighborhood to find inspiration. He died on May 31, 2018 at the age of 88.
