A.Y. Jackson and the Women’s Committee: Building a National Collection

The history of Canadian art would not be the same without the combined influence of visionary artists and dedicated patronage committees. The work "Picanock River (Picanoc)" illustrates this pivotal era when the promotion of art became a national mission.

The Women’s Committee: A Cultural Engine

Starting in 1947, the Women’s Committee of the Art Gallery of Toronto (now the Art Gallery of Ontario) established itself as one of the most dynamic forces in the Canadian art market. Through its famous annual sale exhibitions held until 1967, the Committee pursued a dual objective: to democratize art ownership for Canadian households and to raise essential funds to enrich the Gallery's permanent collection.

A.Y. Jackson: A Steadfast Ally

A leading figure of the Group of Seven, Alexander Young Jackson was a constant supporter of this initiative. Convinced that the Committee was an indispensable tool for cultural promotion, he regularly submitted oil paintings and travel sketches to their sales.

His participation, notably during the 7th Annual Sale of Paintings and Sculpture, testifies to the close relationship between established artists and these volunteer patrons. Thanks to these sales, many of Jackson's works, such as his masterful depictions of the Picanoc River, moved from his studio into private collections before eventually returning to Canada’s public heritage through bequests.
