Penetanguishene is located in the famous Georgian Bay in Northwestern Ontario in Simcoe County. A source of inspiration for the iconic landscapes of the Group of Seven, this region was first visited by Alexander Y Jackson in 1910 while visiting a cousin.
As early as 1913, Dr James MacCallum, patron of the group's artists, invited them to his summer residence not far from Penetanguishene. The painter then realizes the great richness of the landscape and the creative potential that this place offers. In contrast to vast expanses of water, awe-inspiring rocks and boreal vegetation, Penetanguishene presents an altogether different backdrop. The soil is sandy where several farms dot the landscape.
In the work Springtime Penetang, the composition offers a farm typical of the region with plowed soil and a majestic pine tree, reminiscent of the region in which this bucolic scene is found.
The region would become a home port for the 1910s and 1920s for Jackson, but also for several members of the Group of Seven.
