For Pellan, this desire for renewal is expressed above all through colour. In his Polychromées, geometric and organic forms intertwine in vibrant compositions structured by bold black outlines. Colour no longer serves to describe reality; it becomes the subject itself—free, intense, and profoundly modern.

His strong black contour lines, shaped by his interest in stage costumes, murals, and stained glass, bring energy and structure to his vivid fields of colour. — National Gallery of Canada
