J. Russell Harper observed that these years were among the happiest and most productive of Cornelius Krieghoff’s career, marked by an abundance of inspiring subjects. While the Hurons were living northwest of Quebec City, in the village of Lorette, Krieghoff continued to create “small paintings depicting isolated Indigenous figures. Women, wrapped in blankets, climb the hills burdened with garlands of baskets, or carry cradleboards as they make their way across the jagged mounds of ice that crowd the St. Lawrence River facing the city.”
These works, sometimes executed with astonishing speed when financial circumstances required it, were at other times rendered with great care and dedication. The artist poured into them his pride in craftsmanship and a refined artistic sensitivity.
