Jean LeFébure (born Lefebvre) was a painter and sculptor deeply influenced by the Automatistes. Passionate about painting from a young age, he joined a group of dissident artists at 17, finding mentorship in Paul-Émile Borduas, Claude Gauvreau, and future art critic and gallery owner Yves Lasnier. A self-taught artist, he never attended the École des Beaux-Arts, instead learning through his exchanges with these key figures of the movement.
After abandoning his studies in architecture, he participated in the exhibitions Le Salon des Rebelles (1950) and Les étapes du vivant (1951). Between 1953 and 1965, he moved to Europe alongside several artists of the same movement, exhibiting in Spain, France, Italy, and Switzerland. Settling in Paris, he worked as a bookseller to support himself while continuing to paint. It was during this period that he created Grenache, a work strongly influenced by Borduas. Like many of his Parisian creations, it is characterized by dark tones, with black playing a dominant role.
