Jean McEwen pays particular attention to the choice of titles for his series of paintings. His works thus become chapters of a vast pictorial poem. Examples include *Miroir sans image* (Mirror Without an Image), inspired by Louis Aragon; *Compagnons de silence* (Companions of Silence), inspired by Paul Valéry; and *Das Lied von der Erde* (The Song of the Earth), inspired by Gustav Mahler's song cycle. Each of these titles participates in the same quest for balance between painting and poetry.
