The composition revolves around a dark vertical mass—a central black band that became the signature of his production in the early 1960s. This chromatic column divides and animates the canvas, acting as a gravitational well that holds the viewer's gaze. By filtering light through dense impastos and transparencies of intense reds, McEwen manages to trap light beneath the matter. The painting ceases to be a flat surface and becomes a pulsational, immersive space, where color seems to well up from the depths of the canvas.
