Young man with hat

The artist devoted himself to the atmospheric effect rather than to the anecdote, by simplifying the composition and using contours. This firm, simple and contrasting form of the background makes the character immobile and brings stability in space-time.

For the portraits, Jean-Paul Lemieux wishes to eliminate any overload. Marie Carani will explain, speaking of her portraits: "We immediately note a desire to eliminate the overload of precise features in the faces: detailed hair, glasses or other attributes; there remains only the most basic possible rendering. same simplification affects the clothes: buttons, pockets, seams, patterns. These accessories give way to a rudimentary envelope of a single piece of fabric which encloses the gestures, suggesting the essential behaviors, delivering the characters in their being, evoking their emotions in front of the situations."
