RIOPELLE, Yseult, et Tanguy RIOPELLE. Jean Paul Riopelle : Catalogue raisonné, tome 3, 1960-1965, Montréal, Hibou éditeurs, 2009. Œuvre reproduite en couleurs à la page 376.
During the winter of 1964-65, Riopelle stayed in the Pyrénées-Orientales to practice skiing, but he suffered a knee injury which forced him to remain bedridden. To occupy his idle time, he has a variety of paper and artistic materials delivered. During this period, he created nearly 200 works on paper, limiting his production to oils during that year. Also in 1965, the famous photographer Youssuf Karsch met the painter and took his portrait. In this representation, Riopelle is seated in front of a light source, accompanied by an imposing bronze sculpture, while watercolours with fiery lines, like the one here, are arranged in the foreground of the photograph as if to illustrate the year 1965 as a significant creative period for the artist.
