During the 1970s, Jean-Paul Riopelle returned to Quebec after a long absence in Europe. He set up a new workshop in Sainte-Marguerite-du-Lac-Masson in the Laurentians and participated in numerous hunting and fishing excursions in the northern territories of Quebec. Upon returning from these expeditions in northern Quebec, the painter produced a series of oils with new energy. The geography, fauna and flora of the almost virgin territory inspired the artist who created a series of works of varying sizes. He uses the knife to apply the oil in a thick, stirred and even bristling way.

A multitude of works are titled new impressions and are produced during the year 1977.
