John Young Johnstone, born in Montreal, studied under William Brymner at the Art Association of Montreal from 1908 to 1912, before attending the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris from 1912 to 1913. He exhibited annually at the Art Association of Montreal (1911-1925) and the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts (1915-1923), and also taught at several institutions in Montreal.
