One of Canada's most celebrated sculptors, Joe Fafard developed a body of work deeply inspired by the landscapes and rural life of Saskatchewan. Working first in clay and later almost exclusively in bronze, he captured with remarkable sensitivity the animals that surrounded him—cattle, horses, bison, and deer—as well as family members, neighbours, fellow artists, and public figures. As noted by the Canadian Art Institute, his artistic vision is inseparable from his experience of the Canadian Prairies.

Created in 2013, Sitting on Top of the World perfectly exemplifies this approach. Depicted at rest yet with its head held high and an alert gaze, the caribou conveys a quiet yet commanding presence. The impressive spread of its antlers and the dignity of its posture emphasize the majesty of this iconic Canadian animal, celebrating both its serene strength and natural nobility.

In 1984, Fafard received his first major public commission with The Pasture, an installation of seven life-size bronze cows placed outside the IBM Tower in Toronto's financial district. The success of this project led him to establish his own bronze foundry, Julienne Atelier Inc., in Pense, Saskatchewan, the following year. There, he produced the majority of his bronze sculptures. His animal sculptures share a distinctive quality: they all seem to gaze outward, evoking the open air, the vast Canadian landscape, and the profound connection between animals and their natural environment.

As the artist once remarked:

"I can't put my finger on what drives me to do what I do, but I keep doing it anyway. It's a wonderful way to live and earn a living. It makes me very happy."Joe Fafard

Recognized as one of Canada's foremost visual artists, Joe Fafard made a significant contribution to the international recognition of Canadian art while celebrating the cultural heritage and landscapes of Saskatchewan.
