Provenance: Thielsen Gallery

Trained at the École des beaux-arts de Montréal under Jacques de Tonnancour, Lise Gervais departed from academic approaches to develop a lyrical abstraction focused on the expression of matter. This period corresponds to her integration into the art market and exhibition circuits, notably at the Galerie Denyse Delrue and the Thielsen Gallery, consolidating her place within post-war Canadian art.

By the mid-1960s, Lise Gervais's work was characterized by an exploration centered on the texture and physicality of the medium.

  • Working the Matter: According to analyses by the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, Gervais favored applying oil paint directly with a palette knife or spatula. This technique allowed her to layer dense impastos and create reliefs that alter the perception of light on the canvas.

  • The Rhythm of the Gesture: In contrast to the geometric rigidity of the contemporary Plasticiens, Gervais adopted a gestural approach. Her 1965 compositions are organized around dynamic movements and juxtapositions of color blocks where the action of the palette knife remains visible.

Understanding the Artwork: Chromatic Organization and Relief

In this “Untitled” piece, the artist structures the pictorial space within a controlled format on canvas board.

  • Contrasts and Tensions: The juxtaposition of saturated colors creates a direct visual rhythm. The paint is stretched and layered to generate zones of tension, giving the impression of continuous movement to the composition.

  • A Milestone in Her Production: Produced during her creative period of the 1960s, this work illustrates an approach based on pictorial instinct rather than rigid aesthetic theories. Works from this era are currently cataloged in several public and private Canadian collections.
