Lise Gervais – Mon pays ce n'est pas l'hiver (1972)
A Dialogue with Gilles Vigneault's Mon pays
In the spring of 1972, Lise Gervais presented a new series of paintings at Galerie de Montréal, including Mon pays ce n'est pas l'hiver (My Country Is Not Winter). Art critic Jean-Louis Gauthier described the series as follows: “Colour bursts forth, exploding like a thousand fireworks. Near the centre of each canvas, more or less, an ‘event’ takes place. Suddenly, the colours detach themselves in space, exploding and scattering into fragments.” His observation aptly captures the dynamic quality of this composition, where masses of blue, green, and black appear to converge before erupting around a vast central field of white. Rather than depicting a visible reality, the painting conveys emotion through the intensity of the brushwork, the richness of its materiality, and the tension created by its chromatic contrasts.
The title establishes a direct dialogue with Gilles Vigneault's iconic song Mon pays (1965). By reversing its famous line—"Mon pays, ce n'est pas un pays, c'est l'hiver" ("My country is not a country; it is winter")—Gervais offers a reflection on Québécois identity that extends beyond landscape and the traditional symbolism of northernness. Her "country" is no longer defined by climate or geography, but by creative freedom, where painting becomes the expression of an identity in constant transformation.
At a time when the Québec art scene was embracing Minimalism, Conceptual Art, and other emerging practices, Lise Gervais remained firmly committed to monumental gestural painting. Through its imposing scale, vigorous execution, and confident pictorial language, Mon pays ce n'est pas l'hiver fully embodies the artist's contribution to the renewal of abstraction in Québec. The painting synthesizes the legacy of Automatism, the affirmation of a distinctive personal voice, and the cultural questioning of a society undergoing profound transformation, making it one of the defining works of Gervais's career and a significant contribution to the history of Québec art.
