Arthabaska Landscape
Marc-Aurèle de Foy Suzor-Coté, Canadian painter recognized for his great diversity of subjects including the landscapes of his native region of Arthabaska. He set up a studio there in 1895, two years before the execution of this work. This landscape of the region is one of the last painted before his departure for France, where he will remain there for a period of 10 years.
"If you want to succeed, paint for Art, not to please the public. If you work for the public, it's over, you will never be a painter.” Suzor-Coté addressed to his only student, Rodolphe Duguay. (Ropholphe Duguay by the Ministry of Cultural Affairs and Musée du Québec, Imprimerie Provinciale Inc., 1979, p.12)
Suzor-Côté clearly understood the importance of representing the nature of his motherland and not European landscapes. To this end, he mentions: “I think that an artist must paint his country and paint what is there. If you’re really an artist, that’s the only thing you’re going to paint well.” 3 These are the first traces of modernity in Canadian art. The experimental treatment of painting as well as the representations of landscapes inspired by Canada characterize Suzor-Côté's art.
