At the turn of the 1920s, Fortin developed a particular way of representing the foliage of his trees in watercolor. He exploited the unpredictable character of the color mixtures of this fluid medium. After wetting the masses formed by foliage and taking care to preserve a multitude of small dry surfaces, he applies his colors and enjoys watching them merge without encroaching on the constellation of small dry reserves. It is these reserves that give the trees in this series their sponge-like appearance and, along with the liveliness of the shades used, give them such a bold character for the time.
