Marc-Aurèle Fortin developed a passion for watercolor at an early stage, naturally drawn to the technique for its lightness and portability. A tireless wanderer of Montreal’s streets and scenic viewpoints, Fortin found in watercolor an ideal companion—much like the painters before him who favored pochade. For him, it became a means of exploring pure color, revealing the skilled colorist he would become. From the heights of Mount Royal, which he often used as a vantage point, Fortin captured the city’s shapes and hues with remarkable simplicity. This urban geometry, often stylized, was sometimes softened by the swirling smoke rising from ships or buildings within his compositions.
