Port Activity in Marc-Aurèle Fortin’s Watercolours

In the 1920s and 1930s, Marc-Aurèle Fortin drew inspiration from Montreal’s bustling port to explore themes of urban modernity through watercolor. From vantage points such as Mount Royal and near Gare Viger, he captured the energy of the waterfront: steamships, cranes, warehouses, and industrial smoke became key elements of a transforming city. Watercolor’s fluidity allowed Fortin to convey the changing atmosphere of the docks, softening the geometric rigidity of urban structures with the effects of mist and light. These works reflect a sensitive gaze on industrial life, blending keen observation with poetic impression.
