Miyuki Tanobe's work is characterized by its unique, even unclassifiable, style. In a monograph dedicated to the artist, Leo Rosshandler notes that "although her works are figurative, they are neither realistic nor documentary. The distortions, the emphasis, the psychological depth, the texture—all of this suggests an expressionist tendency. However, she does not exhibit the violent execution typically associated with that style."
To share her vision of Québécois culture and imbue her work with a uniquely personal sensitivity, Miyuki Tanobe takes the time to observe her surroundings—the children at play and the everyday passersby. In doing so, she paints a portrait of a vibrant and dynamic society, all with striking simplicity.
