The 1940s is central to René Richard’s work. It is a time when the artist tries to define an aesthetic of his own. Divided between the teachings of his teacher Clarence Gagnon (1881-1942) and his experience as a self-taught painter, the former trapper sought to make the most of the two parties in his early compositions. Painted many times by Clarence Gagnon, Saint-Joseph Street is one of the oldest in the city. In this winter landscape, the tumultuous brushstroke, vibrant colours and angular features herald the development of a pictorial aestheticism that would confirm Richard’s style in the years to come.
