Baie-Saint-Paul, at the Heart of René Richard's Artistic Heritage

Baie-Saint-Paul holds a fundamental place in the history of Canadian art. It is in this Charlevoix town that René Richard found a home, an artistic community, and an inexhaustible source of inspiration. After staying with the Cimon family, he married Blanche Cimon in 1942 and settled in their historic residence, where he would live for nearly forty years.

From this home, the artist tirelessly traveled the roads, valleys, and surrounding mountains of Charlevoix, capturing the power of the Quebec landscape on canvas with a unique gestural freedom. Country houses, winding paths, farm buildings, and rugged terrain bear witness to a territory shaped by time and the seasons.

This work accurately illustrates René Richard's deep attachment to Charlevoix. Through generous texture, energetic brushstrokes, and a palette of earthy tones, he transcends the simple landscape to create a living portrait of Canada's rural heritage. More than just a village scene, this composition evokes the memory of a place that left its mark on the history of art in Quebec and remains one of the most emblematic landscapes of the artist's career.
