At Baie-Saint-Paul, René Richard painted far more than landscapes—he immortalized a way of life. The ancestral homes that dot the Charlevoix countryside become, through his brush, enduring witnesses to Quebec's rural heritage. With their gracefully curved roofs, covered verandas, and harmonious integration into the surrounding landscape, these dwellings embody an architectural legacy that has shaped the region's identity since the nineteenth century.

After settling in Baie-Saint-Paul following his marriage to Blanche Cimon in 1942, René Richard travelled the area's country roads almost daily, finding in these homes a constant source of inspiration. Their simplicity, their natural relationship with the landscape, and the visible traces of time perfectly reflected his artistic vision—one that was authentic, free, and profoundly human. His energetic brushwork, rich impasto, and luminous palette convey the vitality of these places with remarkable sensitivity, transforming them into far more than architectural studies.

This work reflects René Richard's deep attachment to the built heritage of Charlevoix. By preserving these traditional homes on canvas, the artist documents a cultural landscape that today stands among Quebec's most treasured legacies. It also recalls Baie-Saint-Paul's pivotal role as a centre of artistic creation, where painters such as Clarence Gagnon, Marc-Aurèle Fortin, A.Y. Jackson, and René Richard helped shape one of the most significant chapters in the history of Canadian art.
