For nearly 25 years, René Richard has traveled north of Canada in search of the best furs. This nomadic way of life obliges him to move incessantly and to set up temporary camps. For the artwork entitled Scène de campement, the artist presents two men and their dog, preparing their camp in a dense forest. Although the place is not identified, Richard imbues his work with the unique atmosphere of northern regions.

In his memoirs, Richard often refers to the meeting of trappers after many months spent in the greatest solitude. On the subject of these happy encounters, the biographer Hugues de Jouvancourt reminds us that if the relationship between Slim (René Richard) and his partner is periodic and interspersed with long months of loneliness, "This life in common will deepen the friendship that they had each other. Together, with a lot of stubbornness, they had managed to break through the secrets of nature »^1.
