The first solo exhibition of the artist Stanley Cosgrove was held at the École des beaux-arts de Québec in 1939. His works are then exhibited among the members of the Contemporary Art Society. The same year, the painter received a scholarship to study in Europe, however the war broke out and he headed for Mexico instead.

Stanley Cosgrove learned fresco techniques from the Mexican master José Clemente Orozco. His learnings will have an impact on his creation. The realization of works by thin layers of dry paint and the use of soft and subtle colors are the results of this unique teaching.

Upon his return to Canada, he became a teacher at the École des beaux-arts de Montréal. Still lifes, portraits and landscapes will mainly be the favorite subjects of the artist. Skillfully, all these themes have been carried out with softness and delicacy
