Born and raised in the Canadian Prairies from a Ukrainian immigrant family, artist William Kurelek will explore, during his career, different themes such as the life of newcomers and Aboriginals in Canada. He was one of the first artists to paint his vision of Canadian multiculturalism.

The technique of the artist is unique. He created his works using ballpoint pens and colored pencils then rubbing and scratching the final image. Besides being an illustrator, William Kurelek was also the author of numerous children's books, illustrating and writing about youth on the Canadian prairies.

His awareness of his cultural roots will appear from the year 1964. It is at this time that the works of cultural affiliation are born. An ode to the pioneering life of immigrants, thinking through the lives of western farmers about the daily lives of mothers and their families.
