"Rather than trying to replicate what I see every day, I study what this reality is all about." Denis Juneau reported by Le Devoir, 2014

Denis Juneau was born in Montréal (Verdun) on September 30, 1925, suffering from total deafness. After inspiring studies that he began at the age of 18 with one of the mentors of art form, Alfred Pellan at the École des Beaux-Arts de Montréal, he continued his journey in Italy where he studied at the Centre d'art Industriel de Novare. His apprenticeship in Italy was crucial to the turning point in his career, for it was on his return to Montreal in 1956 that his career began.

On his return to Montreal, he participated in a group exhibition at the Denyse Delrue Gallery, which consisted of a dozen artists of his generation, which led him, 2 years later, to set up his first personal exhibition in the same gallery. He participated in several group exhibitions and then solo exhibitions until he was awarded several prizes (Prix de la fondation Gershon Iskowitz in 1986 of which he was the first to receive as well as the Prix Paul-Émile Borduas in 2008). He will be called upon by several organizations to create sculptures and logos such as that of the University of Montreal, which earned him great success.

Denis Juneau will develop a concept of his own and a technique that he will build over the years inspired by the spirit of modern design that he acquired during his apprenticeship in Italy. The art critic Rodolphe de Repentigny described his work as "symbolic projects where each form plays the role of a sign in an algebraic form".

It was in this effervescence that the second generation of plastic artists was born. The movement of plastic artists began to emerge in the early 1950s among young Montreal artists in an avant-garde dynamic that advocated geometric abstraction as the true meaning of the artistic future. These artists, Jean Goguen, Guido Molinari, Claude Tousignant and Denis Juneau, will be the second generation.

Among the many exhibitions in which he participated, the most notable will remain Juneau organized by the Consulate General of Canada in New York (1975-1976), Regards neuf sur l'art de Denis Juneau organized by the Musée du Québec des beaux-arts du Canada (1984-1985) and the retrospective at the Musée du Québec, Ponctuations (2001-2002).

He was appointed a fellow of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts and died at the age of 89 in Montreal on October 6, 2014.
