Beaver Lake, Comberemere, Ont. (1961) is an iconic work by A.Y. Jackson (1882–1974), a founding member of the celebrated Group of Seven. This oil on panel captures with remarkable precision the raw beauty of the Ontario landscape, a subject cherished by the painter throughout his prolific career.

A Life Dedicated to Landscape Exploration The historical context behind this work is deeply linked to the artist's daily life during this period. As a resident of Manotick, a village on the Rideau River, A.Y. Jackson frequently commuted to Ottawa by bus in the 1950s. Soon, the artist grew tired of changing public transit schedules and moved to downtown Ottawa, on Mac Laren Street, in 1962. From that moment, Jackson was constantly asked to participate in various social activities. Despite his busy schedule, the artist traveled frequently to the countryside in the region to produce sketches. During this period, the artist, nicknamed "Alec" by his friends, depicted the landscapes of the Outaouais regions. However, without a driver's license, his movements were more difficult. Fortunately, thanks to his fame and the social network he built in Ottawa, a volunteer was always willing to lead him on his excursions.

Artistic Analysis: The Master’s Gaze In this composition, Jackson demonstrates his ability to translate the very essence of the Canadian wilderness. Through vigorous execution and a color palette characteristic of his work, he transforms Beaver Lake into a subject that is both serene and powerful. This piece is not merely a geographical representation; it testifies to the perseverance of a painter who, despite the constraints of age and mobility, continued until the end to celebrate the splendor of the land.
