Samothrace
Samothrace is a Greek island in the Aegean Sea. A Greek sculpture of the Hellenistic period, entitled the Victory of Samothrace had been found on this Island. This representation of Nikke, the goddess of victory, a woman with spread wings ending her flight to land on the bow of a ship which is now preserved at the Louvre Museum.
The artwork Samothrace, Fernand Toupin was certainly inspired by this flight; the oval shapes lead us to think of the wings of this mythical sculpture. The colors used by the artist remind us of the pure white of Paros marble and the gray marble of the base from which the winged goddess rests.
