In 1954, Bellefleur left Quebec to settle in France. During this stay, he talks with André Breton and the surrealists. These encounters had a great influence on the works he produced in subsequent years. He then became interested in the unconscious and the liberation of gesture in his practice. He now uses almost exclusively the spatula in his compositions. The works of the early 1960s are characterized by the harmony between matter, structure and the freedom that guides the gesture.
In 1960, the artist not only reached his artistic maturity by exploring several techniques. He was also selected to represent Canada at the Guggenheim International Contest presented in New York.
