Hunters and canoe
The world of traveling trappers, hunters and canoiest is ubiquitous in René Richard's work. Having explored Canadian regions for over twenty-five years, his artwork refer not only to his memories, but they also reveal his way of negotiating with environmental constraints. If the canoe allows many trips on the territory, it also testifies to the dialogue between the individual and the nature.
The discovery of Canadian’s wilderness and the freedom inspired by the act of travel have helped to form in Richard’s mind an imagery in which he will draw throughout his career. In the late 1940s, he did several canoe-camping trips near the Malbaie River in the Charlevoix region.
The work Chasseurs et canot (c.1948) refers to his most recent excursions, but also to the milestones events of his experience in northwestern Canada, especially when he undertakes, in portage and canoe, the descent of the legendary Churchill River in 1930 to 1933.
