This painting is a preparatory work for the painting of the same subject Habitants Attacked by Wolves by William Raphaël, which is part of the permanent collection of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. This work is certified authentic by the curator of fine arts at the McCord Museum in Montreal, Mr. Conrad Graham.

William Raphael painter born in Prussia in 1833, he moved to Montreal in 1857. He is an artist-painter, photographer, restorer of paintings and teacher. Raphael is best known for his many portraits of notables but also for his scenes of genre representing the natives or French-Canadian in action.
