How does an art appraisal work?

Cosner Art Gallery guides clients through the appraisal of artworks and collectible art objects. Our expertise includes Canadian, Quebec and international art, as well as a broad range of artistic movements.

We provide inventory, cataloguing and appraisal services for collections acquired over the years or received through an estate.

A thorough and professional appraisal process

An initial consultation helps determine your appraisal needs and the estimated cost of evaluating your collection.

Our appraisers can then travel on-site to conduct a detailed inventory and photograph the artwork. The analysis is completed at our art galleries in Montreal.

Each artwork is assessed according to several criteria, including the purpose of the appraisal, comparable market data and the condition of the work. A professional and unbiased report is then prepared according to applicable appraisal standards.

Why have your artwork appraised?

A professional art appraisal can be useful for establishing appropriate insurance coverage, planning an estate or ensuring an equitable division among heirs. It can also help maintain up-to-date documentation for an artwork or collection.

Our appraisals are conducted by Sophie Ouellet, a member of the ISA (International Society of Appraisers), in collaboration with Mr. Robert Tremblay. They follow the standards of the USPAP (Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice).

To get started, send us photographs of the artwork, a brief description and its location. Our specialists will then guide you through the next steps of the appraisal and collection inventory process.

Appraisals following ISA and USPAP standards

The International Society of Appraisers (ISA), founded in 1979, is a professional organization dedicated to personal property appraisal. Its members undergo rigorous training and must pass the required examinations to earn accreditation.

ISA appraisers provide independent and objective evaluations that comply with the USPAP (Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice).

Appraisers from the ISA's Canadian chapter also have knowledge of key Canadian regulatory and legal frameworks, including:

• Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) requirements;
• Canadian Cultural Property Export Review Board (CCPERB) donation and certification standards;
• legal standards applicable in Canadian courts;
• provincial and federal tax and estate regulations.
